What Economic Development Means for Your Business

September 09, 20242 min read

Why You Should Engage Your Local City’s Economic Development Department?

Many people view cities as a punitive or emergency entity that enforces the law or

responds to emergencies, all for an annual tax. I say this in jest as most people

also know cities provide other essential services such as streets, water, drainage,

sanitation, not to mention public amenities like parks, trails and libraries.

However, many don’t know or realize that cities also provide some form of

economic development services. Defined as “a department that seeks to improve

the economic well-being and quality of life for a community by creating and/or

retaining businesses and jobs that facilitate growth and provide a stable tax base,”

without economic development, a city would be challenged to afford and provide

those services a community comes to rely on.

Essential Services

A strong business base is essential as it not only provides products and services

to the community, while it also absorbs a share of the community’s tax burden.

This is where Economic Development comes in…

In the case of North Richland Hills, TX (NRH), the Economic Development

Department is the official City advocate for the entrepreneur, business, real estate

and development communities, as it connects and facilitates business enterprise

with a concierge level of service. Our full-service department is focused on rolling

out the red carpet to the business community to not only attract but retain and

grow existing business. A rising tide lifts all boats. While we love working with the

greater business community, we also exist because a successful business

community generates a stable tax base, which in turn is paramount for a city

to fund its services back to the community.
