Impact of Empowerment
Have you heard of the old adage that managers focus on directing tasks and leaders inspire and empower? Are you the manager or leader in your own life?
I was recently asked to speak on my favorite leadership book at an event and afterwards I was approached about the fact that there was so much about empowerment in my presentation. I hadn’t realized it at the time. Perhaps I was manifesting a book I’m considering writing about the leaders in my life, but it dawned on me how much of an impact good and bad leaders have had on my career. I’ve had leaders who have believed in me and confidently lifted me up on a pedestal, cheering me on and I’ve also had leaders that would have literally shoved me in the closet under the stairs if they could.
I hold on to those leaders who have made me who I am as an executive leader. I’ve taken every leadership class known to man and no one has taught me how to empower others as those leaders who have empowered me. So, how do we empower others? How do we grow our protégé’s and turn them into the leaders of the future?
The simple answer is “Trust Them” however guiding and mentorship is a lot more difficult. Much like the teachings in my favorite leadership book, The Way of the Shepherd, the first thing is that you need to know and understand your people. What motivates them, what they are best at and make sure they are in a position that plays to their strengths. Set them up for success!
You also need to make sure they understand you. They need to know who you are as well as your vision and goals. Relentlessly communicate your values and mission to your employees. Set high standards for performance and continuously communicate with them.
Delegation – Some people think that a sign of a leader is the ability to delegate. While I think delegation is part of leadership you must first make the time and effort to learn and train them to do whatever you are delegating. Never, think that if you just do it yourself it’s easier. It is not. Doing it yourself, will only lead you down a path of destruction and your employees sitting there doing nothing. Start with collaborating, meeting frequently, and asking their opinions. This builds relationships and trust. Let them share their accomplishments and celebrate them!
Your team needs to be a safe space for everyone on your team to feel comfortable to share an idea. Keep them well informed, invigorated with new ideas and projects, encourage teamwork and comradery.
And lastly, check your heart. Your heart has to be in the game to lead efficiently to ensure the success of your team.
